Every year on March 21st, Kurds celebrate Newroz, the Kurdish new year. On March 21, 2013, Abudullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdish separatist group, the PKK, called for his fighters to lay down their arms and retreat to northern Iraq.
