A decade has passed since ISIS seized control of significant parts of Iraq in 2014. Following the efforts of the US-led coalition, alongside Iraqi and regional forces, victory was declared over ISIS in the country by late 2017, yet the group remains a threat. Kurdish photojournalist Hawre Khalid documented the conflict from day one, capturing frontline stories and the lives of displaced people. Despite significant personal sacrifices, he was determined to create a lasting legacy for his country and future generations.
“Every day, I went to the frontline, interviewed soldiers, and returned to share their stories. Although photographing during and after the war for ten years came with many sacrifices—losing my best friends, grappling with mental health issues, facing danger, and risking the safety of those close to me—it was something I had to do.”
