On May 2, 2022, the Kasnazani Sufi community celebrated Eid al-Fitr in Sulaymaniyah, Iraqi Kurdistan. Adherents came from all over the world to join the festivities: signing, chanting, and praying in the presence of their leader, Sheikh Shamsuddin Mohammed Nehru Kasnazan. The Kasnazanis are a mystical sect of Sufi Islam that was established more than 1,000 years ago, with its leaders tracing their lineage back to the Prophet Mohammed. Gathering several times each week, its adherents chant repetitively in an effort to get closer to God.
