Russia’s war on Ukraine has displaced more than two million people in what has become Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War Two. More people head for the border every day. Nearly 100,000 people have fled to Romania so far. In the border city of Sighetu Marmatiei, officials have built a camp to provide humanitarian assistance. There are approximately 60 tents at the facility, housing almost 300 people. Doctors and other relief staff are on hand to provide medicine, food, and other supplies for those who pass through for just a couple hours or a night on their way to bigger cities or other countries in Europe. A four-hour drive to the east in Siret, other refugees were able to find shelter in a hotel lobby, sleeping on mattresses on the floor.
